And then there was a virus that came to kill the weak and the unprepared.
Many watched as their elected leaders proved their incapacity for leadership.
And then there were killings because guilt will never go away until the actions that caused it are named and accepted.
Now we wait to see what will burn, what will change and what we will be asked to give up by those who expect our complicity in their lies.

Strip it back, says I. Strip it off, let’s see what you’re hiding. Let’s see what’s dangling between your legs and poking out of your distended arse. Be the carpet chewing animal of your hidden dreams. Be the lost cause that everyone falls in love with. Strip it down to pitted and imperfect metal, already rusting from the flying spit that pops and showers, syllable by syllable and strapped, securely, for cash. Let’s see your paranoia, your insecurity and your glazed eyes as the semen showers down on you like summer rain. Strip it back, says I. All this pretending got us nowhere. Got us here. Got us empty. Lost. Stupid. We’re not even any good at being whores. We don’t know how to satisfy. We’re just not that dignified.
Now that’s all changed and the skies are quiet, the roads are quiet, the shit-storm is quiet. Over here, down here, within here, even in our valley of discommunication it’s hard to know how it really feels. City folk pacing their mantraps and peering out into the mad mask of spring, confused in the anticipation of something that may never be. Money worries, food worries, isolationist worries that we never truly knew ourselves well enough to want to spend this time shackled to our incessant dissatisfactions. A world without the scream of the treadmill; surely this is what we all yearned for… but not now, not like this, not without… what? an excuse?
Listen up all you devil dolls, you self circumcised desperadoes of perpetual gratification, this is how it truly is and always was, this is the world of fungal decay and slow rot, all lit up brightly with amphetamine star-light. Wash your hands of it, blinker your nervous opticals and cram your blabber’n’smoke with deep quilted rectal wet wipes. Hum a tune to yourselves as you essentialise the irrelevant and cut a prison wall calendar into your retreating muscle-tone.

We invite you to join our radically innovative students as they share their creative reimagining of the world. Due to the COVID-19 crisis, many of our students were unable to complete their thesis project before our studios closed; the work in this exhibition represents a view into their creative process and demonstrates how our community stays active even in the face of adversity. We hope that you will check back in the fall to see how this work has progressed and that we’ll be able to welcome you in person to their thesis exhibition in the Dorsky Museum on our campus. |

Leaving work wasn't easy. They kept me hanging on as the virus reshaped our landscape. Instead of leaving behind the slowly growing annoyances of needing to work I was coerced into on-line zoom and microsoft meetings. I have no natural instinct for technology. To not become frustrated by my reluctance and/or aversion of that which is normal is not easy for me. It is, however, my choice. And so i toed the line and cleaned toilets and put up or took down signs. When i was allowed to i went with scrub-bar and mower to tidy and finalise my season's work.
My other life, or main life, of music soon got underway and a lot was done in a short space of time. Some of it has already found its way into the public domain, more will follow.
Beyond that there's the trees and the soil and the fungi. Becoming part of it as it becomes a part of me. In darkness there is now light and my perception of life is being constantly reappraised. It is a good time in here; this skin, this valley, this country. Our load is far lighter than the majority. It would be naive to think this happened by chance.

Dissociative vibrations from the periphery. Cane sugar quarantine and black feathers fanning out like exploding acrobats. We are tougher than you’d think but no smarter than squirrels in barrels of glue. That old time linear religion isn’t good enough for me, and anyway, i don’t know any better. Too many years of making my own trousers and cutting grass from bottom up. We’re all looking for someone to look up to in this season separation but the same thug clowns are trampling the visionaries down, using them as foot spas and milking stools. It’s raining money in the free world, pouring from the skies like fish in a twin tub. “Don’t plant your bad days” said the wise old gravel spreader, “or they’ll turn into bad weeks, then bad months, and before you know it you’ll have a whole bad year. Trust me, i know.”

Anyway, I do love them and their frozen wasteland. Unlike most non-citizens, I love Canada. I love Leonard Cohen, Scott Thompson and all-dressed potato chips. I love the pleasantry and the blandness. I love my little memory of Montreal seeing same-sex couples making the fuck out on street benches and being so turned on by all of them. I love smoking crack while occupying elected office and shouting “give me ten minutes to make sure he’s fucking dead” while on camera. I love your comedy television exports. The tattooed punk singers who use offensive words endearingly. Yes, I was scared that mom was broken. Lately I’m more worried about you, but by the time I’m reading this aloud, the problem will have been taken care of entirely. That’s the absolute goddamned glory of socialized medicine. Don’t even fucking try to argue otherwise.

‘The data from the Diamond Princess suggest an eightfold lower mortality amongst patients older than 70 and threefold lower mortality in patients over 80 compared to what was reported in China initially,’ he wrote. ‘But even those numbers, 1.1 percent and 4.9 percent respectively, are concerning. But there’s another thing that’s worth remembering: These patients were likely exposed repeatedly to concentrated viral loads (which can cause worse illness). Some treatments were delayed. So even the lower CFR found on the Diamond Princess could have been even lower, with proper protocols.’ He also cast doubt on the death toll in China, saying it is impossible to know how many people in China were already ill before being infected with the virus – and how many actually died of coronavirus and not a similar illness. He also pointed out that 25,000 people die in China every day, while just 25 coronavirus deaths have been reported per day in the country at the height of the outbreak. |
CBD helps fight resistant bacteria Since the discovery of penicillin in 1928 by Sir Alexander Fleming, antibiotics have saved millions of lives from fatal infections world-wide. However, with time bacteria have developed mechanisms to escape the effects of antibiotics -- they have become resistant. With fewer antibiotics available to treat resistant bacterial infections, the possibility of entering a pre-antibiotic era is looming ahead. Alternative strategies are being explored and helper compounds are attracting attention. Helper compounds are non-antibiotic compounds with the capability of enhancing the efficacy of antibiotics. How to boost antibiotics One such helper compound has been suspected to be cannabidiol (CBD); a cannabinoid from the cannabis plant. Now a research team from University of Southern Denmark, has published a scientific study proving the effect of CBD. Janne Kudsk Klitgaard is Principal Investigator and corresponding author. First author is PhD student Claes Søndergaard Wassmann. The study is published in the journal Scientific Reports. When we combined CBD and antibiotics, we saw a more powerful effect than when treating with antibiotics alone. So, in order to kill a certain number of bacteria, we needed less antibiotics, they say. Bacteria clones spread globally In the study, CBD was used to enhance the effect of the antibiotic bacitracin against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria; a major human pathogen that frequently causes community- and hospital-acquired disease. Multidrug-resistant clones of this pathogen have spread globally. In some countries, treatment of bacterial infections with these resistant bacteria are difficult and the problem is projected to be an ever-larger problem in the future. According to the researchers, the combination of CBD and antibiotics may be a novel treatment of infections with antibiotic resistant bacteria. How do the bacteria die? Three things happened with the Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, when the researchers treated them with the combination in their study: The bacteria could no longer divide normally. The expression of certain key genes (cell division and autolysis genes) in the bacteria was lowered. The bacterial membrane became unstable. Anti-resistance must be stopped According to the researchers, overuse of antibiotics is the main cause of antibiotic resistance. If we combine an antibiotic with a helper compound, that enhances the effect of the antibiotic, we need less antibiotic to achieve the same effect. This may contribute to the development of fewer resistant bacteria, says Janne Kudsk Klitgaard. |
Valley life is the same as it ever was. Beyond the outskirts and happy to be there. More time up in the woods, or native bush, as it’s called. Fungi season is with us and time to track down the elusive psilocybe subaeruginosa and/or other psilocybes. When i grow up i want to be a crash test dummy. Never sure where any of this might lead, but figure if i get high enough i’m bound to find the real underground, after all, everything in life is cyclical; the rich stamp down the poor, the poor get up, the rich stamp down the poor, the poor get up. And so it goes. | Tina Ngata, who has been on the frontline of these checkpoints in Ngāti Porou, says: “We are doing this because we know it to be our responsibility to protect our elders, and our vulnerable whānau. We have the worst incidence rates of chronic illness and cancer in the country, which make us an extremely high-risk population. COVID-19 is not welcome anywhere but if it arrived here it would rip through our communities leaving devastation in its path. We also know our communities. It's because of our relationships and knowledge that we have been able to drive local driver numbers from 146 vehicles per day to 38 per day. We now have more essential vehicles than local vehicles on the road, and have educated our community.” In Maketū, where a checkpoint is set up, local Pākehā resident Bonnie Jackson says: “I’m very grateful for the checkpoints. The operators have been friendly and informative. They demonstrate that this community cares about its members, respects kaumātua and kuia, and helps educate people.” |
THERE IS TALK OF EARTH SEX, BUT NO ONE WILL SPEAK UP. THEY ARE PUSSYFOOTING THROUGH THE MUD. SOMETIMES I WAIT FOR THEM, COVERED IN MOSS AND LEAVES. LISTENING FOR THEIR FOOTSEPS THROUGH THE GULLY AND ACROSS THE WETLANDS. I SEARCH IN ALL THE RIGHT PLACES BUT NO ONE IS CELEBRATING. NO ONE IS JUMPING INTO THE REAL HEART OF THE MATTER. WHAT WE HEAR AND WHAT IS REAL ARE NOT THE SAME. I STAMP DOWN ON THE WET SOIL WITH MY BARE FEET. I SLIDE MY BODY OVER THE ROTTING WOOD AND FEEL THE GRIT AND MUD AS IT COVERS ME, SUCKING ME IN AND GETTING INTO THE POURS OF MY SKIN. THE CONNECTION IS AS REAL AS THE DECAY. WE WILL NOT BE HERE LATER, IT IS ONLY BRIEF AT BEST.
Dogtooth (2009, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos)The breakout film by the Greek director who went on to create Oscar-nominated cult hits such as The Lobster and The Favourite is, even by his standards, pretty darn weird. It’s the surreal tale of a microcosmic fascist dystopia: One family has kept their children confined to their home for their entire lives, teaching them that the outside world is filled with monsters. Yorgos Lanthimos’s unique sense of world building and style of flat, emotionless dialogue are an ideal fit for such an odd environment, one where the now-adult children are growing restless (and sexually curious) in their hermetic existence. That a film this perverse launched a successful Hollywood filmmaking career for Lanthimos illustrates how undeniable his talent is.
it almost seems unecessary to write it down the contradictions come thick and fast trying to follow the thread is a waste of the human spirit | I don't know about you but it feels a bit like emerging from a chrysalis after this period of being home-bound. I have mixed feelings about re-entering the outside world and do feel somewhat different than before. However, when I heard the announcement on Monday about going into Level 2 I felt a noticeable lift in my feelings and a gladness to get back into my normal routine at last. It's going to be a period of adjustment figuring out this new rhythm and finding my flow again with work. The last few weeks I really noticed how much I missed the interactions with my clients and the space I get into when doing my work. It actually grounds me and keeps me focused on the good stuff, when I tune into source and feel the energy flowing in the session. It fuels me just as it does you. How lucky I am to enjoy this work that I do so much. |
Mycelium is a topic that often comes up in the bitcoin space as there are lots of parallels between how the mycelium network and bitcoin network are structured and how they operate and adapt over time. Theres been a few articles on it and i just listened to podcast on it a few days ago. Its definitely something ive been meaning to do some reading on when i get time.
Things i learnt from the bitcoin/fungi podcast:
There are more fungi species than plants and animals combined.
Humans share 50% of their DNA with mushrooms.
The largest organism on the planet is a fungal network - i think its the size of like 15 football pitches and is eating a forest.
